Celebrating 135 Years of Architectural Excellence: A Journey Through Time

As the firm achieves its 135th anniversary in the Fall of 2024, MCF Architecture celebrates the remarkable projects that have defined the firm’s legacy and contributed to its evolution. This milestone offers a moment to reflect on past achievements and the incredible transformation witnessed over the decades in the vibrant Pittsburgh and Western PA region. From Humble Beginnings to a Legacy of Distinction

Our story began in 1889, when Edward Stotz, a talented 21-year-old draftsman from Allegheny City, established the firm in downtown Pittsburgh with a vision that would set the foundation for what has become a cornerstone of distinction in architecture and design. His sons, Charles and Edward Jr, carried on their father’s commitment to people-oriented architecture of substance and pleasing detail. From those early days, MCF has grown into a leading regional firm renowned for innovative approach and commitment to design excellence. “Know your clients as well as possible. Design the building with regard to safety, good taste and reason for your client and for his edification and profit – not for the glorification of the architect or the perpetuation of your own foibles.” - Edward Stotz

Milestones in Our Journey

Each landmark project we've undertaken over the years represents an important moment in our history, they are not merely structures but symbols of our enduring dedication to pushing the boundaries of architecture and design. An early landmark project, the Fifth Avenue High School, gave Pittsburgh its first fireproof school, and marked a turning point in our firm's journey. Its successful execution laid the groundwork for future endeavors including Passavant and Mercy Hospitals, The Church of the Epiphany, Pittsburgh Brewing Company, Oakmont Country Club and Schenley High School, which cemented the firm’s reputation as forward-thinking. After Edward’s sons Charles and Edward Jr. joined the firm, they led a nascent movement in historic preservation and restoration with key regional projects such as the restoration of Old Economy Village, Fort Ligonier, and the development of Point State Park and its fountain, museum, and Block House.

Embracing Innovation and Excellence

At the heart of our success lies our unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence. The firm has collaborated initially with the Heinz family and the Pittsburgh Symphony Society for the restoration of Heinz Hall with its world-class acoustics, beginning in 1969 and carrying through until the present. The firm initially started work on the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts in the mid-80s, using historically accurate restorations with state-of-the-art theatrical technology. The facility opened in 1987 to rave reviews, and most recently in 2024, the firm completed the center’s marquee and exterior signage restorations. “The acoustics of the Benedum are fantastic!” - Luciano Pavarotti Our commitment to these principles has allowed us to maintain a high standard of quality while adapting to new challenges and opportunities. It is this balance between honoring our legacy and embracing the future that defines our firm in recent years, with the creation of the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School, the Carpenter’s Union Administration Building Addition on the Parkway West, Scaife Hall at the University of Pittsburgh, and Penn Highlands Hospital in State College.

The Power of Collaboration and Community

Throughout our journey, we have been fortunate to build strong relationships with clients, partners, and community members. These relationships have been instrumental in our success and have played a crucial role in shaping our firm’s trajectory. Our involvement in the community has also been a source of pride. We are deeply committed to the growth and development of the Pittsburgh and Western PA region, and many of our projects have been designed with the goal of enhancing the community’s quality of life. From educational institutions, offices, healthcare facilities, cultural landmarks, and places of worship to public spaces and campuses, our work has left a lasting impact on the areas we serve.

Celebrating Our Legacy

As we celebrate this significant anniversary, we realize this is not only a time for reflection but also an opportunity to express our gratitude. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our clients, partners, and dedicated team members who have been instrumental in our success over the years. Your support and collaboration have been vital to our growth and achievements, and as we look to the future, we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.
