The Wellness Center
Antioch Colelge
The Curl Gymnasium, a 45;000-gross-square-foot facility, served Antioch College since 1929. The last renovation in the 1960s added an outdoor pool (later enclosed), new gym and four racquetball courts. Since Antioch does not have any varsity athletic programs, the Center was not planned for varsity competition. MCF's design of the $7.5 million renovation transforms the gym into a community wellness center to bring students and Yellow Springs' residents together and embraces Antioch's vision of sustainability.
The upgraded ADA-compliant center includes new locker rooms, indoor courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton and pickleball, multi-use studio space for martial arts, yoga, and fitness classes, two racquetball courts, a fitness center, pool with an eco-friendly UV filtration system, therapeutic whirlpool, flexible multi-use space for special events, lectures, conferences, retreats and performances, and healthy snack bar. Renovations to the outside of the building include a beautifully landscaped courtyard with seating, a deck adjacent to the new swimming pool, and a rain garden with native plantings.
Spacious and filled with natural light, the Center is designed to preserve historic architectural elements while incorporating modern amenities. Completed in August 2014, the Center received LEED Gold certification by the USGBC.
