The Health Sciences Building on the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown Campus was designed to provide new teaching lab spaces for Biology and Chemistry departments as well as create a new home for an expanding Nursing program. The 26,422 square foot space has new introductory and advanced level teaching labs as well as clinical and simulation labs for Nursing. The two-story $9.1 million addition to the adjacent Engineering and Science Building features a stone facade that matches the context of the Johnstown campus. Highlighted by a vaulted-entry space with a skylight, the structure serves as a welcoming focal point at the west end of Johnstown’s campus quad. Completed in 2013, the building achieved LEED Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The distance learning program was improved and expanded by adding an 80-seat tiered lecture classroom with the newest electronic equipment and upgrading an existing 35-seat distance learning classroom including acoustical improvements. A Psychology Lab, including a practice counseling room and observation area, was also added.
