David Lawrence Hall

University of Pittsburgh

The mission for this project was to convert one of the most heavily used academic buildings on campus, which were not conducive to best instruction pedagogy, into a state of the art instructional facility. MCF lead the project programming with scheduled classroom utilization/seat fill analyses and user surveys that determined the need for more classrooms with improved instruction amenities. Multiple 3D design alternatives were developed and evaluated. Two 512 seat auditoriums were completely redesigned for active learning. The professor and student interface were improved with large video projection, natural room acoustics, improved sight lines and reduce distance between professors and students. All other classrooms were fully renovated and 3 new active learning classrooms were built in the upper level of the rear section of both auditoriums. Extensive reconstruction was conducted while most of the building remained occupied.
